as you may know ive been looking for a mount to use for my drums, because i would like to make a personal drumset myself.
the thing is it has one for the top of the tom and one side for the bottom. my set wont have heads on the bottom for my 6, 8, 10 because i like them without the heads.
to the point
would those mounts still work if it only went on one part of the tom?

Not really. Then it'll be pushing on the hoop of the top head and the drum won't be at the same angle as the mount.

Yes they will, you will have to do what I do for concert type toms, mount two lugs at the bottom of the shell in order for the opti to work properly.
And all round, I think these mounts are the industry best, all others, maybe except for GMS`, stress the shell at the top hoop. Opti-mounts or similar, or through the shell, is the only way to go!
Cheers

If your talking about Pearl Optimounts, then you need the lugs on the btm of the drum to mount them properly!

Tyler your probably thinking of I.S.S. mounts. That is what my Session series came with and I upgraded years later to Optimounts (IMO it was an upgrade as the ISS totally sucks - bends your hoops, resonates poorly). The ISS clamps around the hoop, the Optimounts have rubber grommets that the tension rods actually pass inside of.

This is ISS:

This is optimount:
