I'm going to paint one of my snare drums and I'm sanding it down to the natural wood. It had a lacquer finish. I want to get as close to a professional finish as I can, so can someone either post a link or step by step instructions that include the supplies that I will need? And if you could tell me where I can get these supplies, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You are in the right direction, after stripping it of with the lacquer, sand it very finely, the secret to natural finishes is sanding the shell into a very fine consistent finish. If you want to retain a natural finish you can apply a clear coat of lacquer to protect the shell. The other alternative is to apply a color stain to highlight the grains of the wood, may it be the natural kind or the satin oils and then a coat of clear lacguer for that nice shiny finish! Smile

1st of all, you don't want to sand it like to 500 grit smooth, cause you still want the wood to hold onto the finish good enough. if your going to stain if, id suggest using a pice of wet sandpaper with bleach in the mixture to get the grain to a more natural look. when you stain the drum it makes it look alot nicer. then you can make the grain look bolder by using a light aniline dye. usually 1 ounce dye per 1 quart of solvent.

THEN after you lightly sand that all, give it a LIGHT clear coat, and then apply your stain.

after you get the richness your looking for, give it a good 10 to 13 coats of clear lacquer. one thing people think with the clear coat, see that you have to make the wood look wet for it to be justified as a coat, BUT YOU DON'T. if you do, then the next day , you look at the finish, and it will have tear drops off the bottom of the drum. so, use it sparingly per coat. if you do it right, its g2 take at least 10 coats to make it noticeable

and if you did this all correctly, you should have a nice bold grain, and a smooth sexy shine, and 1 hell of a durable finish as well. well, not like indestructible, but its g2 look good

LITTLE WARNING, THIS METHOD TAKES A BIT OF PRACTICE.
AND BE VERY VERY CAREFUL IF YOU DO USE BLEACH
ALSO, ITS NOT PRUDENT TO USE BLETCH IF YOU DON'T WANT TOO

but use the dye a bit, cause it does make the grain look nicer.

I was thinking about staining it but I think I'm gonna do a solid black instead of staining it black because i was gonna paint blue stars on the shell too. Any ideas of how I could paint on the stars? I was thinking about painting the snare all blue and then putting pieces of poster board or some thicker material in the shape of stars and painting black over that. Bad idea?

easy stuff man. just use paint balms to get a nice thick black color. a good 4 coats should do the trick, then after that give it a wet sand let that dry, then put painters tape over it. use an exacto knife to stencil out the shapes, and then use w/o color you want in a spray balm again.

after that, give it a couple clear coats, and it'll be looking sexy. that's the easy way. Smile

You seem to know very well about painting drum shells, I'm planning to do a whole kit in the future, hope I can get some advice when that time comes! Smile

oh my....i dont know alot. ive just painted a few kits for my firends.

if you really wanna learn ALOT and i mean alot, look at Understanding Wood Finishing, written by Bob Flexner.

its got a great part on aniline dye, and raising the grain.

also, i should mention, you have to be very careful with spray paint. if you want to still see the grain coming through the color then you'll only want to be putting on a few coats MAKING SURE YOUR SPRAY IS EVEN, otherwise you'll get an ugly finish. but if you just wanna get a nice thick color, and no grain, then just go for it. Smile

i'm sorry that this isn't wholly relevant to the discussion, but it needs to be done. when typing a post there are buttons at the top of the screen that, when pressed, will insert the correct forum code to give the text formatting effects desired. there is a quote button and there is a drop-down box for font colour (you can highlight text then select the colour you want it to be, this is the easiest way of doing it). if you want to quote someone in particular then you can click the 'quote' button to the top right of their post and it will automatically take you to the 'post a reply' page and insert the quoted text with the correct forum text formatting code.

just thought this might help, i've noticed a lot of failed attempts at this sort of thing on your part

back to the topic of snare painting
