Hook up your mic and record you best solo!

Post your file in this thread, and on November 1st, we'll vote on the best. There will be two voting threads on 1) creativity/musicality/flow and 2) technical/chops/difficulty.

Sound quality doesn't matter - get it in with whatever means you have. Post your sound file to the web with the personal web space given to just about every internet subcriber (you may not know you have it). I'll host sound files until I run out of space, so you can email me at kevinstiles@bellsouth.net if you need me to host your file.

There will be 3 categories: 1) A class for intermediate through pro, 2) B class for "rythym impaired" through intermediate, and 3) best cover (only judged on proximity to original).

This is the B class DrumOff

again....***I strongly recommend that you don't host the files for us until november 1st (or whenever), so that way we won't be familiar with certain drum solos. Familiarity breeds bias through repeated notice of mistakes/likeablity from familiarity.***

you can just upload stuff to the "music online" section at the top of the page... we can probably even make a section for each category up there.

This is a great idea, I'll definately post a solo. Maybe even a cover. Can one enter in each category?

Let's say you can enter in only one of the A or B class (no sandbagging), and may also enter in the cover class in addition to A OR B.

Aw, that sucks. I guess I'll be working on a cover then. Also, good news for the judges, my recordings sound good now! You can actually make out individual strikes, as opposed to the old clips I've provided which were basicaly all cymbal... It sounds very good actually considering it's just a USB headset. Good luck to everyone with their solos. And for those "without a good mic", just try a bunch of different setups. You'll be amazed at how good even a bad mic can sound.

I've found the best single mic setup is in front of the BD, about 1.5' in front of it, biased toward the snare side, angled slightly up, and about even in height with the center of the BD.

When recording a demo with our band, I managed to get the best result whil recording with a battery-powered all-roud (360°) mic, placed above the center of the kit (I fixed the cable at the ceiling, so the mic was faced to the floor)

Im thinking about putting a SM58 in front of the kit. Then another SM58 over the kit.

Mine's off to the side. I find this was my cymbals aren't projecting towards it, and therefore aren't overpowering everything. I have a cheap mic though, and Im sure in front of the bass would be the best setup for most.

hmmm. times almost up. well, I just sat down and did this. didn't have a plan or anything, and i generally suck at solo's when i gotta do one. sometimes i finish a jam session and think "i wish i had recorded that", but when i try for something coherent with a flow, i crack.

anyway, i just messed around for a few minutes and came up with this short little POS, then a couple minutes on "post production / turd polishing" (put a fade out at the end). i guess i win by default if no one posts in the next 7 hours? heh Cool
