I have a 10" Remo key tuned djembe, and am looking to buy another djembe, in either a 12 or 14" size. While I am not sure that I want to go with a traditional rope tuned djembe, I am interested in the cinch tuned djembe's from Everybody's Dumming.com. Especially the Jim Donovan models.

Does anyone have an opinion on these style drums?

Thanks -

Hey whats up man, Im new here and this is my first post. In my opinion roped djembes are whats its all about. Yea they might need a little more work to get them tuned but they always sounded better to me. I personally have a roped Djembe that I reskined, which was a *sometimes angry female*, but its sounds awesome. I went out and bought a authentic african goat skin, with hair and all. I love my djembe more than my set. So thats my opinion....go for the rope. Peace, Pat

I like a combination of both.
For gigging and loud playing, I use my Pearl 12" thai oak (elite series) djembe. It sounds wunderfull, will last me forever and the skin can be replaced easily. (too bad its rather expensive)
But I also own 2 traditional djembés. The sound of the 'mechanical' can't be compared to these. Traditionals sound warmer, less pronounced, earthier. So they are good for jamming, or rythms, but for really articulate playing or solos I prefer the Pearl, because it sounds cleaner. Overall, I like the bass sound of traditionals better and the sharp tones of a 'mechanical'.

Rope tuned sound waaaaayyy better IMHO. And they don't need to be tuned very often if done properly... Very Happy
