I have a 6x14" Conaway maple snare that I hardly ever play. It has an annoying metallic ring to it, no matter what heads I use. I'm thinking wood hoops would greatly help it.

Also, I'm going to refinish it myself because I don't care for the finish currently on it.

Thats his mission statement to have cheap high quality drums.

Dave Conaway is an awesome guy, his drums may not cost alot but they're not of cheap quality. His finishes arent for everyone as they arent machined-gloss. I don't really recommend custom drums unless you dont like standard sizes and/or want some crazy finish.

First of all I do not understand how you guys put together that expensive is always good, and inexpensive is bad.
Conaway builds drums with Keller shells, and so does OCDP. Conaway is relatively inexpensive, and everybody thinks, oh that can't be good, but go "googoo" over an overpriced drum from another company.
I also built snare drums, and I tell you it is not rocket science to build a snare if you have certain machinery and abilities.
I would say Conaway has fair pricing, while other ones are stripping you down to the last shirt. I do not own a Conaway, neither I own a OCDP, but there only so many things you can do with a Keller shell. If you cut nice precision bearing edges, everything else is just icing on the cake. I would love to put two indentical snares, and by identical I mean same amount of ply and same dimensions, and see if there is a 100's of dollars difference. I don't think so. Just my $.02.
