In my band we've been switching around singers and the one we have now sucks. Sad I've always thought that drummers can't do vocals but then I started noticing that some pretty good bands have a drummer/singer. (e.g. Modest Mouse) So i need a mic that won't pic up ANYTHING beyond 1 or 2 inches from it....

Any suggsetions??? The only one's that I think will work are $200+

A standard Shure SM-58 or 57 should do.

You should buy any semi decent mike and aim it away from the kit i.e. facing your face when you play, you should be okay.

Get one of those Britney Spears/Madonna mics that attaches around your ear. Haha.

Actually that's not a bad suggestion. I've wanted one but I have to clear my throat too often. Plus I grunt sometimes when I play. If your sound guy isn't on the ball, that could be a bad thing. I currently use an SM57 for my vocal mic. It has a great off axis rejection (things that aren't pointed straight in to the mic aren't picked up very well) and sounds great to me. You have to work it close and be careful not to pop your p's!
If you go for the headset mic, crown and shure make some very nice models.

A headset mic, while slightly goofy looking, would be super handy. I have to sing in our band as well and there's never a good spot for a mic stand. I always end up hitting it. Those gooseneck attachments work really well for drummers, actually.

wow...probably a little late on the reply...but...ya there are some really good bands out there with drummer/singers...my personal favorite being underoath....a/w a standard mic usually works okay, just dont have it pointed at the set...I sing in a post hardcore band and use some cheap shure mic that i got online and it works great...plus alot of times the soundguys at shows will provide you with a mic thats really nice...oh ya n i wouldnt recomend a headset mic...i tried one for about a month and got tired of all the *Poop* i was gettin...lol...

SM58 man. That will do the perfect trick. That mic is the industrys workhorse. It must be the most used live vocal mic on earth.
