Hi,

If you have two condencer overheads recording your drums in stereo, do they have to be the same model of mics? Are there any potential problems with mixing two diffent models? would phase problems be made worse because of the different frequency responses?

The reason I ask is that currently i only own 1x c1000s, and two sm57's, so to mic my kit I really need an overhead pair, a kick and a snare mic. (granted the sm57 is not the best kick mic, but that's another problem!)

I have to build up my collection of mics slowly as there are so many other things to buy to get my home studio up and running, and i don't have the money to buy loads of mics (sadly!). So i thought it would be more useful for me to get a large diaphragm condencer (e.g. Rode NT1A or AKG C3000b) that could be used for decent vocal takes, rather than another c1000s, to finish off the pair.

Would something like a rode NT1A, and a C1000s as an overhead pair sound good?

Any views would be kindly appreciated (as i'm kind of new at this)

Cheers

I'm of a mind that nothing has to be, but it would reduce confusion in the eq if the overheads were the same.
The 2 mics you're looking at are really vocal mics. Another C1000 would be the logical way to go, since they are supposed to overhead mics by design, won't try to pull your stand over (heavy) and you don't need the suspension cradle.
Don't diss the SM57 BTW. The pros still love them. You cab put them anywhere. The NT1 is regarded as a bit of a toy. I think i've used a C3000 of a kit once but I can't remember where Embarassed Used it for vocals though.

I am NOT an expert.

Yeah the best option is another C1000. These are my prefered live overheads after the Rode NT5s.
