Ok heres the story. i play the drums for my church. well our church burnt down in auguest with me drums in it. we are curently building a new one.
so heres the deal we are going to have a toaly isolated drum room. well probably have soud foam (egg creat foam stuff) on the walls to dampen the sound. the room is aproxamately 1 8. i just baught a new set of DW's and we have to mic them. so im wondering what mics are going to give me the cleanest sound and the best sound. price dosnt really matter that much. so give me your oppenions. _________________ Black on black satian oil dw |

Well...depends how many peices the kit is, but overall id suggest atleast going for a 6 or 7 mic pack. If you're looking for something that will really fit the budget and get the job done then defenitely check these out... theyre great mics at an amazing price. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Live/Sound/Microphones/Wireless?sku=277246
If you're looking for really high end though then have a look at this.. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Live/Sound/Microphones/Wireless?sku=270263
This is a great package from shure, but the only thing you might find is, is that you will want to pick up 2 dedicated overhead mics. There you can just go for a stereo matched condeser pair. (Make sure they're matched)
Have a look around though really, as any decent mic package can get you an amazing huge sound with some tasteful EQ. BTW... if you have the cash get a yamaha subkick as your bass drum mic...its amazing _________________ -----

| Personally I would go for a kick drum mic and two overheads. Perhaps s shure beta52 and a set of Rode NT5s. That will give you a nice clear drum sound and you can just mix in enough low end with the kick. There is no need for a 5 or 7 mic set, three mics will get you the sound you need. This isnt the studio. |

It's a little hard to say, as I haven't heard your kit and cymbals. However, if money isn't an issue, I'd grab the following:
Overheads: (2) KM 184's by Neumann or (2) KSM 32's by Shure.
Snare: Either an SM57 by Shure or a M201 by Beyerdynamic (a great mic)
Rack Toms: I'll get back to you on this. There's one in the studio I was using last night but I forgot the model number.
Floor tom: MD421 by Sennheisser
Kick: I personally favor the Beta52 by Shure, but you can get away with the D112 by AKG.
Hihat: SM81 or KSM 184's are viable options. You can also just let the overheads pick it up. _________________ "To recap, we've learned that Billy Cobham practices on water and Thomas Lang walks on it...I might have to bring this information to the local seminary to get their opinion..."

Just an FYI - That foam won't help much with isolating the sound. The most it will do is minimize the echo in the room.
Are you going for sound proofing or better room acoustics? You may want to build or purchase some bass traps. They make a huge difference. |
