I think custom drums (i.e orange County, Pork Pie etc) are overated and rediculously overpriced. Generally all you're paying for is a unique finish in most cases, and that to me, is a complete waste of time.
Who gives a krap if someone has got fur covered or lizard scale finish on their kit? The sound differences between the majority of all pro-end kits (custom or mass produced) is so minimal, it's just not worth the fuss.

If u listen to your favourite album which u think has got the coolest sounding drums, I reckon you'll be very surprised with what was actually being recorded.

I'm not so much interested in elaborate finishes or even colors. I have custom drums, but the finish is completely natural. A custom finish is sometimes the difference between a workhorse and a display piece.

I think Pork Pie makes a great product, and is no way over priced!

As a matter of personal preference, if you give me an excellent sounding set of drums, all I need is a decent stain, and that's it. That's not to say that I don't understand the application of all those custom finishes.

Whenever I go to the Reggattabar (a Jazz club where alot of greats play at), I'm not going there to see how shiny their drums are. I'm going solely to hear the music. However, were I to go to a rock concert where often the visuals play into the performance, a psychadelic finish on the drums with glow in the dark hardware might fit the circumstances much better.
