ok im cheap and have no money to buy a vintage set. so i was just wondering if there's a way to make the kit i have now (rockwood by hohner) get that old school vintage look? is there a way to give it a new paint job or something? this may sound stupid but i was just wondering... _________________ like i could but i wont if i would anyway... |

Have you got any pics of it so we can see what we have to start with? _________________ Bish

There are ways to do this. I would probably start by removing the wrap that's on it now (assuming there is one) and checking out some vintage pearl or sparkle wraps for a replacement. As an alternative, you could spray the shells with glitter paint and lacquer them, but that's a significantly more involved process that requires tools and experience. On the other hand, if you know anyone that does that type of thing and would be willing to help you out, then you might want to go that route.
Also, you might want to replace your bass drum hoops with some new wooden hoops, perhaps with an inlay of the wrap you choose. If you decide to have the kit sprayed and lacquered, then I'm sure you or the person who does that could also do the outside of the hoops. Then again, clear coated maple hoops look just fine with almost any vintage wrap or shell color, IMO.
Next, I would recommend putting Remo Fiberskyns or Renaissance, or Aquarian Modern Vintage heads on the kit to enhance the vintage feel (and sound).
As a final touch, I would suggest getting some flat-based cymbal stands to really complete the look. Both Gibraltar and DW make some good ones. I believe Ludwig also makes them, now that I think about it.
It's a big project, but if you're serious about it and go about it properly, I guarantee you that your kit will look at least ten times better than it does now when you're done. |
