so here's the deal: i will be moving away to college this fall and will not have room enough in the dorm to house my drum set.
i do, however, plan on taking an acoustic guitar as I hope to keep playing around with music and recording. i figure that the next best alternative to having a drum set, at least if i just want a nice percussive sound to play or record with, is to have a hand drum.
so here's where i need your help. what kinds of hand drums are there available and which one would best suit my basic needs (space is an issue)? which companies are better than others? where is a good place to look for them to purchase?
thanks for all you help |

It depends, of course, upon what you want. I personally would pick a djembe if I had to have only one hand drum since I think it's one of the more versatile. However, a conga (or tumba, et al) would be just as good as well as bongos, a cajon, doumbek, talking drum, etc. Heck if you're feeling like a challenge go pick up tabla.
But, to answer your question more directly, were I to make the decision I'd go djembe, and I really love my remo djembe. You'll have a heck of a time finding one cable tuned like that, as most Remos either have a weird strappy thing or relatively normal tenson rods and lugs. But, the drum itself sounds very good; it's very easy to tune; and they are very easy to find.
Of course, there's also the option of getting Stick Control and a good practice pad and working on rudiments for those 9 months. _________________ So with that title, do I Godwin every thread now?

Even better: go to music school and drum all day. _________________ "To recap, we've learned that Billy Cobham practices on water and Thomas Lang walks on it...I might have to bring this information to the local seminary to get their opinion..."

Personally I'd get a cajon, but I don't know why either. I don't play percussion (yet!) but the percussion instrument I'd most like to play is the cajon. _________________ If you don't like it, you can just *Golly Gee* off! - Keith Moon's last words
