i just bought my drum kit, and i'm kind of new at this, so please bear with me. when i went to put my bass drum together, it seems as though the rims that go around the outside are bent into a slight oval shape instead of a perfect circle. are they supposed to be like this, or is something wrong with the rims?

Most likely something is wrong with them. It depends on how slight of an oval shape we're talking about. (Hopefully) Your bass drum shell is circular, so if the rims don't fit over the shell, then they've probably gotten bent, and if that's the case you should take the kit to wherever you bought it (or send an email if it was an online store) and see if they can replace the damaged parts.

Good luck.

oh, ok, thank you. i have had nothing but trouble from the place i bought the kit from. when it arrived, the box looked like it had been chewed all to peices. all of the screws or tom holders were missing, and the drum sticks were too.

Ugh. Sounds terrible. Sorry to hear about your problems. The bass drum hoops should definitely be circular. I hope you get everything put right.

Unless the bass drum you bought is a 1960's Trixton Speedfire (Which I highly doubt as those are almost priceless now, if you can find one). Then the hoops and shell should be perfectly round.
