Hi there, I am new to Drumdog. I have been playing Djembe and Congas for over 14 years now.
I am willing to share my knowledge with you and to learn from you guys too.
Feel free to contact me via email ut put something relevant in the subject line so I can spot you in the junk folder.
Also, I will have a website up and running in a few months including lots of djembe rhythms and origins tribe info etc...I am still looking for some info. If you think you can help me, contact me. I will save a page for the ones who helped elaborating the site.

Keep the music alive.

Big

Hi guys im new here. Glad to be aboard, a little history on me im one of 3 trumpet players in my church. I also love playing harmonica at home. I do fill in drumming for my church when the drummer is out.

The other day my Pastor came to me and said that he had a djembe hand drum he wanted me to see if I can get some playing going and add to the mix of our musicans when Im not trumpeting. We play southern gospel, black gospel, and contemporary christian music at our church.

My question is, he didnt give me the drum yet and I havnt started learning and practicing but I was just wondering how well can a djembe mix with the style of music we play. I know hand drums give music a latin and african sound, but the closest we sound to latin or african is soulful black gospel worship music. Im just wondering if anyone plays a hand drum in this type of setting and how well does it/or do you think it will mix.

We have 3 trumpets a sax, , a trombone, a drummer, a lead singer 4 backup singers, a bass player, and a lead guitar player.

any tips and comments will be appreciated. Aslo if you have any sites that will help me learn cause im a total noob to hand drumming, I tinkered with a bongo once but was nothing serious.

Thanks again!

I play djembe at my church pretty frequently. We play contemporary worship stuff too, and it fits really well. It adds a whole new layer of rhythm to the music.

ok one more question. How is it pronounced?? is it d-YEM-bay?? or
d-JEM-bay??

The French went into Africa for colonization, and when they found the djembe, they wanted to pronounce it with a very soft "j" like the word for I "je" I don't know many English words that use a soft "j," sorry. So to get the j sound like our Jim, James, John, jab, etc. they had to add the "d" in front to signify that it was a hard "j."
So I pronounce it JEM-BAY(With the traditional English J.)

I've been playing Djembe for about 2 years now, I have a very nice Bougarabou that it's very well carved, and I'm working on making an Udu in art class, so that'll be fun. Very Happy
