Posted: Thu Feb 01, 2007 6:12 pm Post subject: Hi-Hat with Double Bass Pedal Question |
|
|
I've decided to try a double bass pedal. So, I bought a PDP 402 pedal and a PDP HH920 double leg hi-hat stand to give the slave pedal more floor room. The 402 is ok, but I'm having trouble with the new hi-hat stand.
The hi-hat stand moves alot when I play. I'm mostly a heels-up player and I always tap the beat on the hat when I'm not striking it. Also I usually tap my heel on the hat pedal when I'm playing them closed. All of this motion really makes the two-leg stand move. To further complicate the problem, I play in a carpeted room. I've tried adjustments, but nothing seems to work, not completely anyway.
I have three questions:
1) Has anyone successfully stabilized one of these two-leg hi-hat stands on carpet?
2) If so, how did you do it?
3) A rotating, three-leg stand would give me the stability I want, but would it provide enough room for the slave bass pedal?
Thanks in advance! |

I have the PDP two legged hi hat stand, and i have had no problems. Mine came with velcro on the bottom, to stick to the carpet, and i havnt tried taking it off, but it seems like it would be sturdy enough to stay still without the velcro. Mabey it is the way your legs are angled? Try to keep it as much as a tripod as possible, and not like a V on the floor. _________________

Thanks for the reply. I guess I did not specify the motion I'm having trouble with. The stand stays in the same spot - there is no sliding - but it rocks from side-to-side terribly. I've tried numerous leg configurations to have the pedal plate provide the proper "third leg" support, but it hasn't worked. I'm afraid that my natural leg motion while playing, coupled with using it on carpet, makes this hi-hat stand a no-go for me. Aflter I posted this question last night, I tried it on a solid floor and it is much more stable. Unfortunately, my "drum room" is carpeted and is staying that way for the forseeable future.
Thanks again. |

hm... thats wierd. I used to get that same problem (i didnt explain either), where it would stay in the same place, but rock. This was mainly to the fact that the legs were set up not like a tripod, and i had aj gilbralter arm with a splash hanging to the side it would rock to.
It didnt happen again, onced i moved the legs. I play in my garage, with a big carpet under my drums. I guses just keep experiementing moving the legs around, untill you find the sturdiest position. _________________

Duct tape? I've actually had to use it a few times....aside from that I don't know, I've never used a 2 leg stand. I have a 3 leg one where the legs rotate, it's amazing. Might wanna look into one if you find the spare cash. of if you're really creative, you could find something to clamp to it (like a splash on an arm or jam block) and use it as a counter balance. _________________

| I do not know if this is the case but if the carpet has padding under it will make things bounce or wobble around, nothing you can do will suppress the problem. Well maybe a few hundred pounds and time to crush the pad LOL. |

Thanks again everyone for the responses.
Unfortunately, Bud is right. It's the carpet padding and there is nothing I can do about it. So today I boxed it up and sent it back. I am awaiting its rotating 3-leg replacement. |
