Has anyone ever played or does anyone own a Pork Pie snare or Pork Pie kit? Like them? How about the snare throw off?? Any good or should it be changed for something like a Trick throw off?
I recently ordered a 7x13 Amber PigLite snare (the acrylic ones) I was just wondering how people like them. I've heard that acrylic is kind of a compromise between metal and wood with lots of projection but a warm deep note.
Thanks _________________ "Hi" - Me |

I was lucky and got a Pig lite snare at a pawn shop for $150 it still has the plastic over the padge. I love the sound of it, very responsive. Since it's acrylic you get more of the head sound, so get the perfect combo of heads. I have an aquarian hi-energy head on the batter and the original pork pie head on the bottom. It's a really nice snare... you will like it.

yup i have a pig lite too. excellent snare for the money. you should be
quite happy with the 7x13 you ordered. and let us know how it goes too.
i've had three heads on my pork pie, all aquarian, focus x, hi-energy,
and a studio x. so far, the focus x is my favorite, followed closely by
the studio x. but hey man it's up to you _________________

Yeah I have the 6.5 x 14 Pig Lite snare with an Evans Dry HD head on top. This thing is amazing, got just the sound i wanted out of it, tune it right and its golden. I also put a 42-strand snare wire on it because i wanted a fat deep sound, and it couldn't be better.

I tried the acrylic Pig Lite at GC one day and thought it sounded great. I was pleasantly surprised. Acrylic doesn't do much for me when used for a bass drum or toms, but I think it works quite well for snare drums.

I own a PigLite and I really don't find it to be that great. I've tried a variety of heads and I've settled on an EC Snare head for now. It has a very unnatural ring to it no matter what heads I use, but maybe I'm too much of a maple fan to really appreciate acrylic? Try it out at Guitar Center if you can first, and don't go with it just for looks. IMO there's better snares for the money.

On a side note, the drummer for the local band There for Tomorrow uses a Pork Pie kit and it sounds amazing. I don't know what wood or any specs, but it's the best kit I've heard live.

I was going to get a pork pie clear acrylic snare, but I ended up with a Spaun vented coke bottle snare (for $170). The spaun has a much more distinctive "crack" sound, and it is much louder than the pork pie. That's my opinion.
