I am usualy a metal drummer but last night i got invited to drum in my friends emo band because their previous drummer was going on vacation and they needed a fill in, so i accepted just to do him a favor. The problem is that i dont really listen to emo therefore i dont know how to play it. So my question is:

Is there any specific beats that are good for emo drumming?

Also wut type of feel does emo music have, is it heavy or mellow or sort of in between?

Also wut would be some good emo bands to listen to so i can get an overall feel of the music?

I'm a metal guy too so I'm not the best one to answer this...

But I DO know that emo is in between heavy and mellow. Usually the beginnings of songs are heavier with the verses being mellow...then chorus gets heavy with a lot of screaming and whining over it. Smile

Can't help you out with emo bands to listen to since I avoid 'em.

Annnnnnd as for TYPES of beats....Metal has a lot of "BUSY" stuff going on. Emo typically does not. So stick to more straightforward rock-type of beats rather than a lot of tom work or a lot of double pedal.

Emo is an alternative genra, emo is short for emotional.

Its usually fast, loud, and there is usually double bass. ( im not saying all emo music is fast and loud with double bass, some bands are more mellow) .There is also usually a lot of screaming, the lyrics are usually very poetic too.

Some good emo bands to listen to are: Alexisonfire, From first to last, The getup kids, Saves the day, hawthorne heights, shady view terrace, from autumn to ashes, and the used.

I hope i helped Very Happy

It means you have to divide to measure into a 3/8, another 3/8 and then a 2/8 (3/8 + 3/8 + 2/8 = 8/8 = 4/4). So you don't count 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &, but you count 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2. (Iron Maiden uses this a LOT)

Just a comment:
Personally I hate the idea of genres and sh*t. Obviously we need em but bands are becoming to hard to categorize. Some of the bands you named are emo bands. But their are different kind of emo, same as different types of metal.
So just listen to the best, but I guess the best thing you can do is listen to what the drummer of the band yoru filling in for does and copy him. Can't go wrong with that.

Just jam...Best way to learn is to do....Hell, you might even create a new approach to emo drumming. The drum beat police arent going to arrest you for playing outside the box. Laughing Laughing
