I need some help. I'm just starting out and I'm trying to find an inexpensive drum set, mostly to learn on. I'm not going to be doing any gigs in the near future, so I don't need a high-end set. But I'd also like to get decent quality, so that I won't have to worry too much about upgrading for sound quality, etc...I found a Gammon 5pc Complete (cymbals, hardware, etc. included) for around $300. Has anyone had any experience with Gammon? Should I look for another set, such as Ludwig or Pearl? I'll be able to spend around $500 max. Thanks for the help.

i haven't really heard of Gammon before, but i'm assuming theyre just a generic brand. its probably better to buy from a reputable brand, just because the drums and hardware especially are probably a little bit better and it will be a lot less of a hassle if you need parts or service.

that being said, definitely shop around for a used kit in your price range. if you buy new then you'll only be able to afford bottom of the barrel drums and cymbals which, while playable, quickly become not a lot of fun to play and have no resale value. you'd be surprised at the quality instruments you can buy at amazing values if you keep an eye on EBay, Craigslist, and your local wantads. you'll also very likely be able to get all of the hardware, cymbals, and extras that you need to actually play all bundled together.

I've been searching Craigslist for my entire state and I've found what appear to be pretty good deals. I found a Ludwig Accent 5pc for $400, hardly ever played. And a Pearl Export for $375. Also, 2 different Pearl Forum sets for $350. Any advice would be helpful.
