Snare head dilemma

I've been thinking of getting a new snare head, to replace my crappy Remo ambassador coated. But I can't decide between the 14" Evans 'powercentre' coated, or a 14" Remo Emperor X coated snare head.

Whats your experience with these heads? Is there another head (in teh same price range) that would be better? I play a large range of music, from heavy rock to indie to brass band.

The evans power center & power center with the reverse dot are some of the best snare heads I've tried. They have a nice fat sound, are pretty durable, but are still sensitive enough for brushwork (I prefer the reverse dot for this reason - doesn't get snagged by the brushes).

I haven't tried the emperor X, but I've heard it can be pretty dead sounding unless you tune it really high.

I've also heard good things about the Evans ST Dry head, if you want a nice "crack" without many overtones.

What kind of sound do you want from your snare & how do you tune it?

I believe the Emp-x is remo's thickest head and therefor limits its tone. It's good if you don't want much more than a thick crack.

Personally I like an ambassador or emperor on my snare

I'll always recommend the Aquarian Texture Coated with Power Dot. It's very articulate and very durable that sounds good at any volume.

I haven't tried the Emperor X, but a heavy double-ply is going to have the sensitivity you're looking for.

Has anyone used an Evans Hazy 300 snare side head? With the one I have now, my wire seems to ring forever as well, even when just hitting the drum normally. (although it is a 42-strand....)

Personally, I like those snare wires to buzz for a while. Without that, the drum sounds lifeless to me. It's a snare drum, after all. They're supposed to buzz. If you don't care for it, though, I would definitely recommend getting a 16 or 20 strand set of wires -- my choice: Puresound.

I only really worry about it becuase I play with a brass band, the lower brass instruments make the wires vibrate a lot, and it gets really annoying.

Seems to be a while since someone posted.

The problems you seem to be having are because you're not correctly tuning your skins - it's not the type of skins you're using.

The snare side 300 hazy is a nice snare side head.

Ambassador skins on both sides of your snare are always recommended.

They came as standard on my Pearl Masters MMX Custom (14.6.5")

I use the evans hazy 300 i love it. I would recommend the evans g2 coated snare head.
