Of course you well know that the CX's are made of maple. I love this set all except the snare. It just doenst have the crisp crack that I am after. I have tried Evans STD Dry head, and the Evan genera G1 coated. I cant get the sound I want out of it and I was wondering if anyone else had a problem like this. These CX are AMAZING the Bass Drum sounds like a cannon with thos aquarian SK2 reso, and batter side heads. A VERY GOOD INVESTMENT!!!

I would try sticking the Remo Ambassador on it.

Keep it simple. My Pearl Masters Custom MMX (Maple) snare sounds superb by just keeping it simple.

Have you tried seating the heads before tuning?

How are you tuning them?

If you have real difficulty getting your favourite sound, it may be your tuning, or you need better quality drums.
