This doesnt really have to do much to do with the art of double bassing itself, but i figured this would be a good place to post it, for easy reference.
Its the most recent discussion i could find here, on what is better: 2 bass drums, or double pedals. It has some good info in there. _________________

Hey guys,
Thaught I should tell sumone who can apreciate it, My new personal best on the double bass is 300Bpm's at 16's
Hell yeah! But it sux, I cant allways get it.
240 at this stage is easy, and I can allways clock that but only on my up days (when I am not babelas) can I reach 300!

| Something I found very perculiar with the dbk is that I could lock my legs and ankles up and blast 300bpm out of there and keep it for a minute or so, but when I tried doing it slower I couldnt handle it (this was back in the day though) So as a small contribution to the thread, I must say work up on slow and try to avoid locking your legs ^^; |

Think of it like a buzz roll vs. an open roll.
Most people learn to play a buzz roll very easily, since it doens't take subtle stick control. Just like the gattling gun approach to double base.
One thing that I started doing (by accident really)while learning double bass was to add hi-hat accents. While playing straight 8ths on the hat (with my right hand) I used the pedal to open and close the hat to play a 16th between the 8ths. The trick is getting the left foot quick and controlable enough that there is no open hat crash/buzz - it simply sounds like an extra stick note.
Of course, Bohnam triplets is also a good way getting away from the tendancy to buzz twitch the basses.
My two cents. |

hi, i have a couple of things
when practicing double bass i can go nicely at about 105 with nice loud even volume etc, but anytime i try to go faster i always seem to start playin both feet at the same time insted of alternating :S anyone help with this?
also i another problem i have found is that my normal playing technique is different to my double bass technique, so its really hard to change in the middle of a song, any tips on this?
thanks guys _________________

I have some suggestions, I am by no means a double bass master, but I have gone through simular things.
Some things I do when practising double bass. Try doing many DIFFERENT tempos, even much slower ones. Push yourslef until you can't get steady smooth notes. Once you find that place, slow down the tempo, and concetrate on the smooth double feel, then SLOWLY start speeding up again. Lather, rinse, repeat.
For a consistant thechnique, MAKE your double technique mirror your normal technique. Do you play heel up or down normaly? |

well, when i play single bass i play heel up, and when i use the double bass for things that arent straigfht 16ths or whatever i play right heel up, left heel down; and finally when im playing straight double bass 16ths i play both heel down.
so yeh lol i have quite a range! which is the problem.
i have seen clips of George Kollias talking about his book which teaches you to use ankle technique for all speeds, but i haven't seen the book yet _________________

| Cool. Well, you could either try mastering both techniques so you can transistion smoothly between the two, or just concentrate on one technique. |

Huge Breakthrough!!!
i was practising a minute ago, just playin straight 16ths to a random song, not too fast.
Then i decided to lower my throne about 6 inches...WOW! it made such a big differemce! i used to have my stool at max height so i could get at the toms easier.
I always used to be able to get the speed, but lower my stool have given the power and consitency i was lacking at high speeds.
I'm so happy because i was seeming to be stuck in a ditch and not improving at all
Anyone else find a lower stool makes it easier? _________________

Heel-Toe, does not actually involve your hee. The name refers to the rocking motion going on, it is actualy ball of your foot-toe.
Actually when I play heel toe it is heel-toe. The ball of your foot is a little too close to your toes. That would be ball-toe or something...lol |
