I have a problem of cracking cymbals. at first i hated it because i just bought them. but for the style of music im playing, i kind of am used to the sound now. so i actually prefer a cracked cymbal to a cleaner new sounding cymbal anyways. so now when i got my new sabian 18" crash, the first thing i did was take the jig saw and make like a 3" crack in the edge. it sounds PERFECT now. i love it.

If you like cracked cymbals... maybe you're just enjoying the trashiness? If so, just get yourself some Wuhan chinas and save yourself some money.

If your having a problem cracking cymbals it's probably because your hitting the edge of the cymbal with the broad part of the stick repeatedly and very hard. but if you like the way it sounds then more power to you. but I would agree with kuniggety, buy cheap cymbals if you like trashyness.

that makes me cry. if u do make a crack on purpose, drill a hole at the end of the crack, so that it does not go deeper into the cymbal.

Whilst I think the process he's going by to get that particular sound is very expensive and ruining a perfectly good cymbal.... if that's what sounds good to him - then cool!

He'll realise that in a live situation, nothing will project... and it'll sound awful.

No need to be so harsh people.

First off, I edited the title to fix the there/their homophone issue.

Second, whether or not this is a good idea sound-wise (or perhaps the most effective solution), this definitely does compromise the structural integrity of the cymbal. In that view I'm not sure that it's a good idea.

theres a King crimson song with Bill Bruford playing a crakced crash that sounds amazing. Anyone care to remind me of the title? I think that cymbal has become ledgend for any Bruford/prog fan, so unique and one-off.
