upgrading to a new kit, hardware, cymbals

i'm ready to upgrade to an intermediate kit that can be used in general rock drumming. I'm about to start a band so it needs to hold up to that too. Ive been looking at pearl (masters, export custom...) yamaha, and the new PDP series, platinum. i've got up to 2000 dollars to spend, but really can't go over it. any suggestions about those drums or any other new suggestions i'll be glad to take. also any suggestions for hardware and double bass drum pedals ($150-350). finally, cymbals (currently using b8s) what would you recommend?

I'm personally a fan of pdp, although i've never heard of the platinum series. I think that they're great drums that sound great and hold up really well (although I've heard some people say that the wrap tends to peal but i've never had this problem). as far as cymbals go, you have to go with Zildjian A customs in my opinion. I love mine and wouldn't trade them in for the world. double bass pedal depends on if you want chain driven or direct drive. I'm personally a fan of direct drive and they can get a little pricey. but if you like chain driven go with dw either 5000, 7000, or 9000.

over the years, i have owned 2 pacific kits. i liked the first and hated the second. the first one i owned i bought in 2001 and it was i good quality and good sounding kit. the second was an 805 series kit and i hated it, plus the bearing edge on one of the toms was faulty from the factory. anyway, i honestly would suggest buying a higher end kit used, and getting some cases. i know most might not agree, but you can get a dw, starclassic, or any other pro level kit in your price range used and maybe have more to spend on cymbals.

i always say go for a semi pro kit and por cymbals so you could buy an export and then maybe get some hhx's which would be cool

Gretsch Renown and Sonor 3007’s come to mind. Both are great sounding and a superb build. I own the 3007’s and have played the Renown’s many times. Both are maple and have that lower fundamental tone that maple is known for. Money wise you get a complete kit with the 3007’s and the Renown’s are a shell pack. The Renown’s go for around $1499 and the 3007’s can be purchased for around $1229 (both 5 piece). If you need cymbals as well as hardware for your budget the Sonor 3007’s may be your better bet.

PS Both are more pro line than simi-pro, great drums.

Look into Mapex Pro-M or Saturns. Great drums and great hardware for an equal price with other brands but you will get more with Mapex.
