I am looking at buying my first set of drums and I need some advice in deciding between two options. I'm looking at biginner level kit and I have narrowed it down to two choices at identical prices. Tell me which makes more sense:
1. New Tama Imperialstar 5 piece
2. Used Pearl Export 6 piece (has 10" tom extra)
I'll hold discussion about the cymbals for later, but just on the merits of the drums themselves, whats the best route to go. The Tama Imperialstar is a true beginner set; the Export is Pearl's next step up (call it an intermediate level) from the Forum line. I think the Pearl Vision line recently replaced the Export line(?). The Export appear to have some design advantages over the Tama such as the tom mounting system ... better isolation. Does this stuff really matter? Let's assume I replace the heads either way. Will going with the Export keep me satisfied longer with the set, or will I be anxious to upgrade just as quickly?
Thanks for any light you can shed. |

it sounds to me like you already have your mind made up shark. I would probably go with the Pearl set out of the 2. I'm not personally a fan of Tama Imperialstar sets. truth be told I'm not a big fan of pearls either, but the export series is better then the Imperialstars in my opinion.
Have you sat behind either one of these sets?
thats the true test. which ever feels more comfortable to you. _________________ The Lord delights in the ways of man who's steps he has made firm.

pearl definatley,IMO though, at this level, to me they're all the same, its got more to do with what color you want or which badge is on the front.
As for cymbals, any thing less than intermediate are bin lids; wouldn't have them given me. In the old days you never got cymbals with a new kit,but these days shops are falsley enticing drummers to buy there kits by giving away cheap cymbals, such as zildjians 'solar' or sabians b8's. They'll do nothing but take up precious boot space. _________________ kit: vintage rock pearl export racked,16" zildjian avedis, zildjian z crash, 21"sabian aax ride,14" axx fast hats,18"zildjian china, evan g2 heads, yamaha maple custom absolute 4" snare, gretsch 5" birch snare, mapex janus double peddle,5b vator sticks. |

assuming they are similar prices, go for the pearl if it's in good condition
for cymbals there are two roots:
1. buy cheap cymbals to learn on, replace them with good cymbals when you can
2. be pattient, and buy individual good cymbals when you can afford to _________________ If the only way you can accept an assertion is by faith, then you are conceding that it can’t be taken on its own merits |

Yeah but the set he's looking at is used. There might not be any cymbals with it. _________________ The Lord delights in the ways of man who's steps he has made firm.

most definitely the export.
It's a step above the beginner imperialstar kit. you'll find that you will get good quick, and the export will still be at your level for a while. |

like evryone here said, the pearls baby! when i got my first set it was between my CBs and some used tama and now i really regret not getting the used tamas, can't remember for the life of me what they were now. and if the pearls don't have cymbals, you can pick up a decent set of cymbals for cheap, I got a set of Sabian B8s consisted of a total of 5 cymbals, 18" crash 20"ride 16" crash and 2 13" hi-hats and with a few extra tools, cost me under 300 bucks, hope I helped, and good luck shopping.... after writing this post I realized this thread is over a month old..... lol, I hope you got what you wanted _________________ ***HOOK IN MOUTH!!!***
