Yeah, racks rocks! Tubular racks is the only option, I think. The square racks, such as the Pearl ICON rack, doesn't offer the same positioning possibilities since the clamps can't be rotated around the rack bars in the same manner as the tubular models (Gibraltar, Tama).

I use a cheaper model, the german Magnum rack (only offered on the Musik-Produktiv website at www.musik-produktiv.de ), but the quality doesn't differ too much between Magnum and Gibraltar. As long as the rack bars are steel and the clamps are die-cast steel there's really not much that can differ.

A rack helps a lot. I got rid of all my tripod stand legs that otherwise would cross each other and create funny buzzy ringing noises and I shrunk my stage space somewhat. Also, it's much easier to transport and it's faster to rig and tear the setup for gigs. Frankly, I see nothing but pro's in using a rack.

I USE A GIBRALTAR RACK. THAT THING ROCKS. I JUST RECENTLY INVESTED IN A SNARE STAND THAT IS HELD BY THE RACK. GOING WITH THE RACK WILL CUT DOWN ON YOUR SETUP TIME AND WILL ENABLE YOU TO NOT HAVE TO RE POSITION EVERYTHING EVERY TIME YOU SETUP AND TEAR DOWN.

Gibraltar all the way. just be sure to get at least one memory lock for each multi-clamp that you purchase as some heavier attachments may sag without one. Also, Gibraltar is owned by Hoshino (Tama) so you can interchange Gibraltar / Tama Multi-clamps, Memory locks, Caps, Pipes, Ect.

If you gig or move your equipment often, a rack will make your life exponentially easier.

I thought Gibraltar was owned by Kaman. Is Kaman owned by Hoshino? Confused

I don't really mind pearls square design. I find that rotation isn't really all that big of a deal, and I'm always nervous about the circular designs, and slipping, and I know it's stupid but I am, even though I've never had problems with mounts slipping on any rack I've played on. Racks are great. They cut down the weight of a hardware bag by half, and take up no space while moving. I also like the ability of expansion on most racks now a days, making the world of drumming a very interesting place.

I play a smallish five piece kit:

9x10 - tom
10x12 - tom
12x14 -tom
17x22 - bass
5.5x14 - snare

and I have 4 cymbals + hats.

I've been toying with the idea of buying a rack for a while, but I was wondering if there's really any reason for me to with such a (comparatively) small kit. Obviously I can see why a rack is helpful for people with 10 piece kits and such, but do you guys think that, for me, it would be worth it?

Any input is appreciated Very Happy

It really depends on what you'd like to do with a rack. If your happy with your set up and everything, then a rack is simply an extension of whatever your doing at the moment. A 10 piece set does not necesarily predicate any sort of justification for the use of a rack. i've seen players who use 4 peice set-ups and have racks. The thing about it is the fact that you can get a rack for less than nice ride these days. using a rack simply to mount toms, and cymbals will cut out a whole bunch of heavy if your moving around, and playing gigs.

I'm getting the Tama PMD800SS and the extension units, soley because of weight. I have too many tripod stands, and the weight adds up. Also because I have a back injury it's very benificial on my behalf.

I just ordered my Gilbraltar rack. I'm getting the curved double bass rack with both side extentions. I also need 15 additional clamps. This stuff ain't cheap. $750.00 for the whole thing.
