in high school we had an Aquarian Superkick III on our 18" bass drum, and it sounded pretty good. it was kind of a happy medium between a totally opened bass sound and a really tight punch, so it worked well enough for anything from jazz to funk to rock. _________________

well, i would put it inside the the drum and then put the batter head on.
i hate being a noob to drums, or to anything for that matter. _________________ my myspace. CLICK IT! |

Which would suit me better? Coated or Clear resonant drum heads??
I need a resonant-less, loud, 'fat' sound, for playing rock music. At the moment i have to use Moongel tabs and duct tape to get the right sound, but it doesn't really look too good. I'm kind of torn between the Evans G1 and G2 pre-packs (12, 13 & 16). Thats a hard enough decision without the Coated/Clear choice as well.
So, which is the winning combination? Thanks in advance for help and advice. _________________

clear resonant heads. if you were considering G2s as resonant heads, then i would highly discourage that. two-ply resos can sound decent, but there is a very distinct possibility that your drums will sound like cardboard boxes. i would recommend just using muffled batter heads and normal, one-ply, resonants to achieve the sound youre looking for unless for some strange reason you're really hellbent on two-ply resos. _________________

i'm using evans G2 coated batter heads and G1 clear resos. i love it!!!!!!
and whoever suggested the aquarian hi-energy for my snare batter head and classic clear for snare reso head, thank you very much. my snare has such a beautiful crack!!!!!!!
as for my bass drum tho, whenever i play, i hear a whole lot of beater attack and hardly any thump. i tune my bass drum batter head (remo powersonic) pretty low. i just heard about 5 minutes ago that tuning it loose will give it more slap and tuning it tighter will give it more thump. is that true? _________________ my myspace. If you want an open sound i'd recommend Remo Emperors or Evans G2's on the batter with Ambassadors or G1's on the resonant side.
If you find they're too open, try some Evans EC2's or Remo Pinstripes.
I loved the EC2's on my old Pearl Export fusion before i got my Saturns. |

The evans website
http://www.evansdrumheads.com/EVAProductsDS.aspx?ID=13
recons that G1's are warmer and more open, which is what i was after so that would say G1's, EC1's or remo ambassodors, i reckon coated.
Apparently coated doesn't have less sustain but this site disagrees.
What do you guys think? |

I like that idea......
So, I just recently move from a 3 night a week gigging Hard Rock Top 40 nightclub band to a Wedding/Corporate band that is much more dynamic it is sound...
1) What are the recommended heads for that Wedding Band style....
I assumed to change to a more controlled less overtone......
I was using the Evans EC-2....but not crazy about them.....but that was for the harder hitting scene.....
Any suggestions......my thoughts were to try Remo Pinstripe or give the Evans Hydraulic a shot _________________ Mark Scar |

Hi.
I'm replacing all my drum heads and I want some that will sound deep on the toms and sharp on the snare. Right now I have Evans G2 Clear heads on my toms and Evans G2 Coated on my snare, and they're not really giving me the sounds I want. What would you all recommend?
Oh, and my bass batter head has a hole in it (currently patched with electrical tape). I'm wondering what kind of head to get for a harder, metal sounding industrial bop. (Hard to explain, so I'll give an example. Listen to the bass in 'In Your Face' by Children of Bodom).
Thanks. |

try out Evans EC2 for the toms. they have a real nice punchy sound, but aren't too choked and still have a good attack.
on the snare, there are tons of options. i'm currently using an Aquarian Hi-Energy... which is actually a clear, one-ply head with a reinforcing material covering the surface (instead of traditional coating) and a smaller reinforced patch in the center. it has a really cool sharp, powerful crack and is tough as nails. it might be up your alley, especially since you seem to be into harder music. also maybe look into Aquarian Studio-X or just a regular ol' one ply coated head.
on the bass, i'd have to recommend the Aquarian Superkick II. probably one of the best heads ive ever seen, it has a fat, tight, punchy sound but doesnt sound choked. _________________

Anyone ever (been forced to) use Pearl ProTone heads? Our church got a new Pearl Export kit and those are the stock heads that come with it. Except for one Remo head on the 8" tom.
The Bass drum sounds excellent, toms have held up great and sound great. The snare coating is coming off within a few months, so I would recommend immediately changing it. Other than that, for stock heads, ProTones are actually decent. |
