it would help if you told us the pedals, Confused
the sweet spots usually the point with the least amount of effort and the most attack to it, usually to the middle of the pedal, but myself play usually back,
usually the sweet spot for dw is usually the second 0, eliminators are the start of the bumps, maybe toes onto the lines(tho i play close to the "v" usually). Ludwig is where its the longest bump sequence.
speed, like everyone else says comes with time that you get speed so practice, losing any weight or buffing up can help
beaters, usually the easiest is the elimnators, cause there are 4 beaters so you can mess around until you figure out what you like

there has been a lot of talk in recent years about double bass drumming techniques... how to do it fastest, what pedal will go the fastest, crazy ways to position your feet to get extra speed, etc...

everyone wants to be the fastest double basser on the block, but it seems that most overlook the simplest solution: practice. theres nothing unique about double bass drumming; simply practice slow and steady and don't go any faster until you're actually comfortable. you've gotta be able to walk before you run.

practice with your feet just like you would your hands. strengthen your weak limb, and play various rudiments until you've got them down pat. it can even be a good idea to play through rudimental snare drumming books... with your feet. there are a few good books specifically focused on double bass (i have The Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming. it's pretty good.)

it would be great if some wise internet sage could come and say "zomg, you've gotta get perl eliminaterz with gibraltar beaters and use the heal toe technique from joe bloes video!" and your problem would be solved. but it doesn't work that way. so keep practicing.

also... a metronome can't hurt.

you can definitely play double bass very successfully with any set of pedals that isn't complete trash. the only real difference that's been pointed out between cheaper and more expensive models is that the slave pedal tends to lag a little bit on the cheaper ones... but thats really something you'd only notice if you upgraded and had to get used to a new pedal. the only valid problems to blame on your hardware are when the pedal literally falls apart or locks up or just doesn't work at all like it's supposed to.
