| My first ever drum kit was, I think, third hand, and the kick pedal had never been replaced, and it was rubbish to start with. By the time I got it, the beater was only a couple of inches from the drum because of how loose the springs had gotten. I soon bought a much better pedal, but the springs were tight no matter how much I loosened them and the beater was a lot further back from the drum. For as long as I had that pedal I kept accidentally double-tapping the drum, and I'm doing the same with my new kit and pedal. Should I go back to my old, crappy pedal (has to be a lot slower seeing as the springs are so loose), or try and get used to the new pedal? |

i would try to get used to the new one, simply cause you've spent the money on it and it would be a waste to give up now. maybe just play some basic stuff with it for a few days till you get used to the feel. while you shouldn't be forcing yourself to play uncomfortably, it still often takes a while playing to get used to the feel of new equipment on your kit. mess around with the settings, maybe see if you can get the springs looser and adjust the beater so it's closer to the drum.
if you really aren't a fan of your new pedal, then for sure go back to the old one. if it's still in working order, then you're good to go. loose springs really aren't a problem, and won't slow you down at all if you're used to them. they can also be easily replaced if you decide its time for them to go. _________________

It took me a while to adjust to playing new Tamas, Yamahas, and Gibraltars after playing on a vintage Slingerland pedal for a long time.
Largely, after a while you get used to it and you learn to use your feet in different ways for the pedals.
I think it's a good thing. _________________ "One day I feel I'm on top of the world
