It depends on the style of music and the volume that you want to play at. For a clear, defined sound, play on hats or cymbals with the tip of the stick. If you want a washier sound or more of a hissing sound if you're playing the hi-hat, then hit with the shaft of the stick.

I hit it with the neck because i have my drum kit packed quite tightly together and the high-hat is close to me, so it's much easier. The only problem is I use Ahead sticks (the kind Lars Ulrich and Joey Jordison use) and it makes the sleeves crack easier, but they're only like a few quid a pair....

I use every part of the stick. Doing this gives you more versatility in your sound. The hi-hat is such a versatile instrument, it would be a shame to waste it on hitting it only one way Smile

I use the whole stick. If I averaged it out, it would be mostly the tip and about 2" from the top.

test every way out and then mimic the dynamics you need for whatever song you're playing. hit in the fashion according to whatever sound you're looking for. there's no right way to strike things on a drumset. possibilities are endless.

personally i play a combination of the tip and the shoulder of the stick. for both open and closed. depends on where it's at on what song im playing.
