I just watched my Dave Weckl HOW TO DEVELOP TECHNIQUE DVD for the first time. I am a bit disappointed in the amount of actual instruction on the DVD. He spends more time playing with his band than teaching. I think the instruction on Moeler was very helpful, but he just barely touched on finger technique. I really need the technique for playing continuous fast 1/16ths on hi-hats --situations where you can't count on much bounce. OH well, the search continues.

yeah, I'm not a fan of teaching DVD's in general. You actually need a teacher to really learn anything. Better to learn from someone who see's your mistakes then trying to emulate and "fake" a certain technique, that you really don't know how to play.

I have that video too, and my opinion's similar to yours.
Try to master finger-technique in a very formal style first and
then add some moeller. It's easier to learn this way, I think.

Go to your local drumshop and get a moongel-workout-pad. These
are the blue silicon-pads. If you practise your rudiments on them
you will get pretty fast on your drumset because theres almost no
rebound with this pad.
If you want to play fast 16th's on your hi-hat,
be sure to start slow and use only the muscles you really have to use.
Incorporating any movements that are "useless" for the desired sound
just make you slower and sweating. Here's a usefull move for fast 16ths:
Use your wrist for the first stroke, then let the stick bounce two times (grip
loose and a little finger-help) and then just raise your wrist a little bit to do
the fourth stroke. Start very slow to get this stuff in your musle-memory properly. I try to explain it:

.......1...................e.................+...............a
Wrist down......bounce.........bounce.......wrist up

Here's an example of how fast it can go without sweating Wink

I hope that helped!

Sorry for my baaaaad english!
Have fun,
Frank

I finally found a video that does actually show the correct technique to hold the sticks and play with the correct fingering. Joe Morellos "The Natural Approach To Technique"

as far as dvd's for the technique you may be striving for, i think steve smith's newest dvd is very good. i can't remember what it's called, but it's very easy to find and i'm sure you'll benefit from it.

If you want a Weckll demonstration of finger control get his video Back to the Basics, he goes more in depth on finger control for both matched and traditional grip.
