I recently purchased a snare from my nostalgic past - a (6.5 x 14) Ludwig Supraphonic. I am looking for a good head match that will give me a very DEEP, DEEP punch. Any suggestions? Thanks!

It's hard to go wrong with a coated Ambassador, but it's not so much the head, but the tuning that will get you what you're looking for.

Here's a helpful link.

This is probably the first time in my life I ever find myself recommending the Evans hydrolic heads. Either that, or some sort of two-ply head.

Yeah, if you want fat, I'd have to recommend a two-ply head on top, tuned more loosely than normal. Stick with a clear single-ply bottom head, though, like an Aquarian Classic Clear, Evans G1, or Remo Ambassador. Lastly, don't tighten your snare wires too much. Let them buzz a bit for a fatter sound.

Try out the Remo Smooth White Emperors. There CRAZY thick, last SUPER long, and don't give that dry sound like a coated, more like a tomish sound (which I figure is what your looking for).

My thanks to everyone for the great (and varied) suggestions. Having just recently brought my old Ludwigs out of storage for the first time in almost 20 years, I was really out of touch with today's market. That said:

Fwuffy, you might be on to something there. Wink

Bytor, I had to mention that I recently tried an Aquarian SK II for the first time and was very, very impressed. I have been helped many times by reading your posts and I may be becoming another Aquarian convert.

Once again, my thanks to ALL!

Many thanks for the kind words, Roland! I'm happy to hear my ramblings have helped. I'm also glad to hear you liked the Superkick. Aquarian makes some great equipment, no doubt about it. Good luck getting that fat, punchy sound you're seeking out of your Supraphonic (man, what a great drum Smile ).

Roland, I have the same 6.5 x 14 Supraphonic. I just put a new Emperor X on, and it sounds great!!! I've looked at and played a lot of snares and I keep going back to my favorite Supra!!!!
