You need to give us more info on what you are looking for in a snare drum. So, what are you looking for? _________________ TANSTAAFL |

The issue is that both sizes are "normal," so to speak, in that you'll find both out there readily availible. Perhaps the 5" a little more often. Really, I'd just say go play em and find which one you like better.

Hmm, decent wood snares under $180 are a rare find, I'm afraid. If you want a drier sound but can't afford a maple snare, you might look into a hammered steel shell snare. Also, generally, the shallower the drum, the brighter it will sound. If you want a really bright snare, that 5.5X14 would be nice. Personally, I like a little more body to my snares, so if it was me, I'd go for the 6.5X14. This drum can still give you a bright sound if you crank down the heads, but at the same time, it can give you a much deeper sound than the 5 1/2 inch drum would ever be able to give. I just think the 6 1/2" depth is more versatile.

You could look at pacific. They're all maple and sell between $150-$230.But they only have 51/2 and 6 inch sizes. You could also check out www.midwestpercussion.com .They have a big selection.

if you're looking for a bright sound, i suggest you go with a metallic snare instead. they also tend to be cheaper than wood.
