Final update to this saga...
I had a hell of a time trying to tune the Emperor on the 14" tom - could never get it right. Anyway, I put the Hydraulic back on this tom and following some suggestions from the Evans DrumTalk forum I tightened up the reso side heads and got a great sound. Not dead at all - the toms sing nicely. The sound is what I would call "round", meaning that the annoying high frequency overtones are gone, but there is still a good attack. So I went out and bought Hydraulics for the 10 and 12" toms and had them tuned up nicely in minutes. These heads are easy to tune.
I put an Evans ebony EQ3 with 4" ported hole on the kick drum reso and this killed the beater backlash I was experiencing. The kick drum now really kicks a**. And I replaced the original snare side head with an Evans Hazy 300.
So here is the final setup:
-Toms: Evan Hydraulics on the batter side, Remo Clear Ambassadors on the reso side
-Snare: Evans Genera Dry on the batter, Evans Hazy 300 on the snare side
-Kick: Evans EMAD on the batter, Evan EQ3 with 4" ported hole on the reso. |

Hi Guys
I've had my Advantage a couple of months now and I'm ready to change the batter heads. I've just changed the snare batter head and am knocked out by the result .... much better.
I've used the Evans Genera coated single ply with muffle ring (B14GEN). Could I improve on this?
Now I've witnessed just how much better that change is I am desperate to change the batter heads on the toms. I was going to go with remo pinstripes .... would that be good?
And how about the bass? I have no idea what to go with there .... I just want someone to make my mind up for me on that ..... please. _________________ Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage, Zildjian A Custom Cymbals.

if you want two ply heads on the toms go for Evans G2's. I prefer the coateds. On bass go for Aquarian Cleard Superkick II _________________ Yamaha SCA

As you can see from this thread I've put Evans Hydraulics on my toms, which are similar to pinstripes. The oil in the head equalizes the sound so they are much easier to tune than standard 2-plys such as Emperors. I haven't tried G2s but I've read only good things about them. If you can, change the reso heads on your toms too - it does makes a difference. Use either Evans G1s or Remo Ambassadors.
As for the bass drum, I found the combination of an Evans EMAD and Evans ebony EQ3 with 4" hole the best. The EQ3 has a muffle ring and the hole lets out some air which helps reduce beater backlash, yet it's not so large that you lose sustain. With this combination I need no additional muffling inside the drum. |
