For the money, I think Pearl Exports are pretty nice. No they aren't top of the line Masters, but then they don't cost what Masters do either! I've met touring professional drummers that play Exports! With the right heads and proper tuning, Exports are some great sounding drums! The wrap finishes look nice and hold up well too! If you're going to gig with this kit that's a big factor! Here's a few important tips I'd give anyone looking for a kit.
#1 Look at what you need and what you can afford! You can have a "dream kit", but you have to be realistic about what fundage you have!
#2 Don't worry so much about name brand when you shop for a kit! Yeah the "Big Boys" are out there, but some custom shops can get you a kit for far less if you look around! If you're not an endorser, what do you care what name is on the drum? The name plate is and advertisement! It's a commercial for crying out loud! The most important thing is how the drum sounds. Not the name plate!
#3 Durability! Will it hold up? Again the big guys have some cool kits, but look around at some custom stuff too and don't be afraid to go in to a store and ask questions!
#4 Don't be afraid of used kits! At least look at them! You can save a huge chunk of change buying a used kit.
#5 If you do buy a new Export, or whatever, be prepared to toss the factory heads and put some good heads on the kit! Batter and resos! You'll be amazed at how much difference a good set of heads will make on even the cheapest of drums! Factory heads are most often crap! Take them out to country and use them as target practice...or save them incase of an extreme emergency! lol But don't play them unless you have to! Trust me on this one!
