Short story, I need new heads for a set of rototoms, but I"m unsure of which ones to get. There were a set of pinstripes on there, but not being a fan of remo heads, I was looking into hydraulics or performance IIs since they're all 2-ply oil heads for that lovely box sound. However, I'm not really certain what to get.
Longer story, I went garage sale shopping today and came across a guy selling his whole kit. It was a Pearl Forum with B8 Pros, so that didn't tickle my fancy, but he was willing to part with his Remo Rototoms for $10. Jumping on that like a glutton on a box of fries I bought them. Now, this evening after working through some lessons and such, I wanted to play around on the set and new rototoms. I tuned up the toms, and everything felt fine until I hit the 10" tom and it snapped with oil getting all over me. "strange." I thought as I tried to remember how exactly I hit the head to make it break. I cleaned up the oil and then hit the 6" tom with the same explosion. Apparently the heads are very brittle for some reason, and seeing as how I've already broken two, I might as well replace all three. So, I'm looking for heads and there's more detail in the short story section. |

Sounds like he might have stored those in his garage for a long time. I don't know about you, but my garage is like a F'ing oven during the Texas summers and heat is not a drumhead's friend. Plus Roto Toms are usually tuned high, so the combination of heat and high tension probably dried those heads up and made them brittle.
Performance IIs don't have oil between the plies, so if you want that type of head, Hydraulics are the only chioce. But PIIs should give you a similar sound without the oil-explosion factor. You could also try Response 2s, G2s or Emperors/Pinstripes or single ply heads with a power dot (Classic Clear/Studio X, G1, CS, etc.) _________________ "If I didn't make a living beating things with a stick, I'd probably be in a lot of trouble!" - Alex Van Halen |

| Yeah I'd say a clear 2 ply head or powerdot. |
