so I read somewhere that (ideally) floor toms don't have legs and are mounted like toms...
my question is, is this actually possible for something like a 18x16 floor tom? _________________ everything=3 |

I've never seen a 18" RIMS style mount (16" is the biggest I've seen), but Gauger does make a "floating" floor tom mount. It's the same idea as RIMS but in reverse - instead of hanging by the top hoop, it floats on the bottom hoop. _________________ "If I didn't make a living beating things with a stick, I'd probably be in a lot of trouble!" - Alex Van Halen |

Sure, You can suspend a 18" tom with RIMS on a rack or similar solutions but from my experience the tom will get pretty unstable, especially if the tom is mounted parallell to the floor. The tom wiggles a lot when it's played. Could work better if the drum is tilted though.
I think David007's link provided a better solution than rack mounted RIMS. _________________ My Premier Artist Maple set! |

Exactly. An 18" drum, and even most 16" drums, are pretty shaky when suspended with conventional RIMS mounts. David's suggestion is definitely the way to go. |

There you go - that's what I was talking about.
Here's the Gauger version: DynaMount _________________ "If I didn't make a living beating things with a stick, I'd probably be in a lot of trouble!" - Alex Van Halen |
