so I read somewhere that (ideally) floor toms don't have legs and are mounted like toms...

my question is, is this actually possible for something like a 18x16 floor tom?

I've never seen a 18" RIMS style mount (16" is the biggest I've seen), but Gauger does make a "floating" floor tom mount. It's the same idea as RIMS but in reverse - instead of hanging by the top hoop, it floats on the bottom hoop.

Yep, it's rather possible.

Sure, You can suspend a 18" tom with RIMS on a rack or similar solutions but from my experience the tom will get pretty unstable, especially if the tom is mounted parallell to the floor. The tom wiggles a lot when it's played. Could work better if the drum is tilted though.

I think David007's link provided a better solution than rack mounted RIMS.

Exactly. An 18" drum, and even most 16" drums, are pretty shaky when suspended with conventional RIMS mounts. David's suggestion is definitely the way to go.

There you go - that's what I was talking about.
Here's the Gauger version: DynaMount
