i'm thinking of buying a pearl export or a yamaha stage custom.
i'm concerned about the sturdiness of the yamaha hardware. the pearl stuff is double braced but the yamaha stuff isn't. i've also heard bad reviews of the yamaha hi-hat stand and pedal.
anyone got experience with either or both of these brand's hardware? |

I personally haven't had any issues with Yamaha hardware. However, I have had issues with the Pearl Hardware. Particularly, anything with that accursed "Uni-lock" system. What eventually can happen is that part of the mount can get stripped, and as a result, it won't hold in what ever position you put it in.
Go for the Yamaha drums, I'd say. I've seen Pearl Exports fall apart within a year and a half of people buying them. |

i have Pearl's best boom stand and a couple of the very same yamaha stands. Buy Yamaha for the total package since the drums are better (most important), and you don't have to fight with the Yamaha hardware. i also have a small splash attachment that takes 15 mins of painful wressling to get the wingnut to turn. i have similar problems with the boom stand as well. also, the pearl has a counterwieght, though not a big one, and it's still not much different that the Yamahas, but lacks the features that Yamhas have like a hiding boom.

I would choose the Yamaha. I’ve used Tama, DW, and Yamaha in three different personal setups over the years. I used Pearl in different school (high school AND college) situations and I always had to fight Pearl hardware to get things where I wanted them. The Yamaha gear lets ME dictate what goes where.
Both the Export and the Stage Custom are just one level over “entry” but you get more for your money with Yamaha.
Hope this helps.
Oh, I'm in a playing situation now that I use a house kit that is Pearl's Masters Custom and I have my own Yamaha Maple Custom. While I like both, I prefer the Yamaha.
And as far as sturdiness goes, my Yamaha gear matches if not exceeds all others. If I sound bias here, it's because I am. Thank you, Yamaha.
That's me, and to me sound comes first and functionality comes in a close second. Everything else is just advertising fodder. |
