Have any of you had a problem where you tuned all your heads just right, but for some reason you couldnt get the floor tom to stop rringing, and have less sustain? iIve noticed that my small tom dies alot quicker with the bottom head on then without, my mid tom stays around the same with and without the bottom head, and the floor tom dies quicker without the bottom head then with having it on, Is this normal, common, or what? i know there not tuned bad or wrong i tuned them a couple times but they keep doing that, its ok if theres no way of fixing it but just wondering.

No. I want sustain. If you don't want sustain, why bother with bottom heads at all?

The floor tom situation makes sense, but the high tom doesn't at all. Your floor tom should ring louder and longer, just because it's bigger, but when you take the resonance heads off, each drum should ring louder but not longer since there's nothing holding the air back. Notice that marching quads/quints don't have any heads, yet have plenty of volume and don't ring very long. Sounds to me like there's a tuning problem somewhere. Try taking off all the heads, tuning all the batter heads to the same note, then tuning the resonance heads. Make sure you use the vertical, horizontal, diagon, diagonal tuning method as well so you don't have any dead spots too.
