Long story short I'm moving my toms off the kick drum due to constant frustration with having them be where I want, and I also want to put the ride in the normal position on a 4-piece while still having a 5-piece.

That all said, I'm currently playing on a pearl export, and not really caring for pearl hardware and having constant issues with getting the tom arms where I want I was looking into getting RIMS or something for the drums so that then I can use the L-bracket arms and make everything fit a little more nicely.

The question is how will it effect the sound of my drums? Since the current tom arms go through the shell there'd be a rather gaping hole left, were I to suspend them, so it could give them a drier sound. Of course, this is all speculation at this point, so if anyone has a thought, please send it this way.

couldn't you cut a piece of metal that would fit where the old mounting goes, and just stick it in there?

I thought about that, and don't know why I didn't include that in the options. I guess my concern there would be having to ensure as little air gets out as possible, and how much (assuming whether) it effects resonance.

IF you do go with the rims mounts and want to plug the whole then you might try this.

Find a dowel stick slightly bigger around than the hole. Cut off a section slightly thicker than your shell. sand down that section till it will push into the hole with ease. Then glue it in place. The sand it inside and out untill it is level with the rest of the shell.

There you go, one plugged hole.

But if your picky with the way it looks you might try this.

Buy some wood filler that matches the color of the wood your shells are made from. Fill in the holes. let it dry then sand it level with the shell. Then take a graining pen and draw some wood grain that matches the grain of the wood the shell is made from.

Their you go, one matching plug.

Hope I helped.

Well, thanks alot guys for giving ideas on how to plug the hole, but what I'm really wondering is how it will effect the sound of the drums. more so than anything.

Just take the tom off the arm, hold it up by the rim and hit it. It should sound the same as if it were mounted using the rims system. Then put it back on the arm and hit it, you can see for yourslef if it sounds any different.

I didnt notice much if any change in the way mine sounded.

I have the pearl style mounting on 2 of my toms and I too was thinking of upgrading to some kind of L-rod style mounting because I just cant quite get my 13" tom in a good position.

Heh, I love how the easy, obvious answers are the ones I always miss.

Well, I ordered the mounts, stand, etc, and within the next week and a half or so, I should have it all ready to go. So, to bide my time I popped over to DW's kit builder and I planned it all out. I'm going to turn this into this.

Real pictures once done.
