I was just looking at the specifications of the mapex V-series kit and the mapex site says they are made out of basswood.
I also noticed on other sites that drums made by Pearl & Tama all the way up to Export and Rockstar are made out of luan/philippine mahogany and maybe a single ply of basswood.
So my question is would a basswood V-series sound better than a luan forum/swingstar or maybe even a Export/Rockstar?

IMHO - no.
I think the mounting system, heads, quality of bearing edges, etc. makes a LOT more difference than the wood. I would choose based on those factors rather than the wood. Also, think about your intended use. Laquered wood drums look a lot nicer than wrapped, but not great for heavy gigging. _________________ What you got back home, little sister, to play your fuzzy warbles on? Sorry....but i tend to disagree there!!
The type of wood makes a HUGE difference i mean, thats the main thing that sets a swingstar shell apart from a starclassic maple shell, the type of wood!
In the lower end kits, with the composite woods where they put a few different types of wood into a shell i dont think it makes a difference, but of course when you are comparing a solid maple shell with a mahogany shell...it will make a HUGE difference!
But yes, u can definately make a lower end wood kit sound good with the right heads, tuning etc...and check out the bearing edges!! |

There are a few things that decide the natural tone, wood type, bearing edges, and dimensions of the drum. The wood quality is extremely influential in deciding the tone of the drum, just as much as a bearing edge or the size of the drum. In order to achieve the drums natural tone, proper tuning techniques must be used. Wood type is very important, but dont think because you dont have maple or birch that you arent going to have a good sound, its just that you wont ever be able to achieve the maple sound, its just a different natural tone. _________________ Capitalism is where man exploits man, Communism is the other way around. |
