So you are interested in what a mahagony shell sounds like? I dont know what style of music you play or are into, but I will tell you that mahagony shells by "gretsch" are full in rich WARM LOW END tone, they dont carry sound like a maple or even birch kit would, but as far as tone goes they are great. I would never use a kit made from this wood in the studio, or if you play in a loud rock/punk band. Birch is my first choice. I was looking into buying a Catalina Elite set from Grestch but, I ended up buying a catalina birch set instead because the Elite (although having the great sound I was looking for) did not project like I wanted it to.......and I fell in the love with the mid-rangr sound of the birch kit........
