Hey all,
I've been considdering getting a few cup chimes or bell cymbals for some time and I was wondering if any of you guys would recommend any.

Basically, stuff like this:

and the Terry Bozzio cup chimes.

What is the size on those pictured? I am not really very familiar with cup chimes and bells, other that the bell on my cymbals. Shocked

Thanks in advance for the enlightenment. Cool

Well, I believe the one's pictured range between 10" and 16". Otherwise, they can go between 8 and 18".

So they give a more pronounced bell sound when you strike them? Do they double as a cymbal, the larger ones that is? Because I have seen those Zildjian Z-bils. They seem to be between 6-10 inches in diameter. Are they similar to those?

Well, some are, but the ones I posted ring longer, and with a deeper tone. Basically think of it sounding like a bell.

In my personal opinion you should ditch the chimes and dinky bells. Ever heard "Closer to the heart?" Neil Peart has a set of bells more powerful, and probably expensive than all the paiste bells and chimes. Save up and go for that!!

I know EXACTLY what you're talking about and those are fun and all (hell, I got a kick of playing those parts on the set we have in school!), however, they aren't the sound I'm looking for. The orchestral chimes are good for things which require a definate and consistant pitch, however, I'm looking for a more percussive bell sound. Two things to search for that will show what I'm looking for: 1. The opening part of track entitled "Allegria" by Cirque du Soleil. 2. A Terry Bozzio solo using his chimes and bells. 3. The tune "Tangram" from this place: http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=mbettine&templatefn=FileSharing20.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.20.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en
