I've got a D 112 and an SM-57 that I just started using to mike a 26" bass drum and snare/hi-hat respectively with a plain old tascam cassette four-track recorder. The SM-57 is doing an excellent job covering its designated area, but the D 112 is producing a very weak and muffled kick even though it's placed a couple inches from the resonant head. Am I missing something with regards to the mixer's settings (i.e. trim)? Should I add a third SM-57 as an overhead and just use the D 112 as more of a low-end reinforcer?
thanks in advance,

Not sure about the D 112, but the SM57 is a good choice for the snare. Most folks put the mic inside a hole in the batter head.
As for "overhead" or HH mics, you want to use an SM58 or other condensor type mic - NOT the SM57, wich has a limited direction and is really for individual drums. _________________ What you got back home, little sister, to play your fuzzy warbles on?
