I was wondering what you all would recommend for a new snare? I wa looking at the Mapex Birdseye Maple Black Panther. Anyone have or use one? I basically looking for a maple snare with a nice warm crack and not really any overtones. Any help would be great!! Thanks!

You’ve probably decided on your drum type by thinking through some of these questions already, but to help the DrumDogs better answer you, give us some more specs to work with such as:

What type of music/instruments are you playing with?

Are you miked or acoustic?

Venue size?

What else makes up your existing kit?

That birdseye maple Black Panther is a gorgeous drum, and it's rather nicely priced, too, considering that it has die-cast hoops. I'm not sure what kind of bearing edge Mapex puts on those snares. Knowing that would help give you an idea of how many overtones the drum is inherently going to have.

However, there are things you can do to limit overtones. I have a maple snare that is pretty ringy with a standard coated head on it, but after putting an Aquarian Focus-X batter head on it, the drum has just the right combination of "crack" and ring. Depending on your head choice, I think the birdseye maple Black Panther would work pretty well for you.
