Hello everyone! This is my first post here, although I've been lurking around for a while . I've been drumming for about 6 or 7 years and I'm thinking of buying a new kit.
I've found a real nice used 5 piece Premier Genista from 2002. What is everyone's opinion on them?
This particular set's sizes are 10*8", 12*", 14*14" toms and a 14*5½" snare. The bass drum is 20", and it's got no toms attached to it (they're on separate stands). |

Sounds like a pretty nice kit to me. Have you seen/played it? If it's in good shape, sounds good, and the price is right, I wouldn't hesitate. Premiers are generally quite nice.
Welcome to drum dogs! |

I had one a few years back....two or three....I sold it....totally, totally regret it. It was a GREAT kit. I love premier drums. The undersized shells, etc....The Genista's are great kits...I love birch drums.
If the price is right, you won't be sorry.
I'd love to have a GenX kit as I've only heard good things about them too.
later,

| I haven't been able to play it yet, but I have seen pictures of it. It's in mint condition! The price is equal to about $1300 or £700. This might sound a bit expensive but where I'm at, all music instruments are way over priced. For comparison, a brand new Premier Artist Birch - which from what I've read is a notch or two under the Genista - is almost double that price. |

| Hey, I've got another question. How are the older Genistas from around 1996? |

Yeah, Genista is one of the best drum series You can find. Genista was discontinued due to the releasing of the "Premier" line (boy, that line name is STUPID, You never know if they mean the brand or the line in those ads...) just a year ago, and at the same time APK and XPK was cut out of production, introducing the all maple and all birch Artist series and the Cabria serie.
Genista are hand made in the UK, undersized drums and considering the year of production I'd suppose they are equipped with RIMS as well, right? Once Premier got hooked on suspended mounting, Premier drums have never sounded better!
About the 1996 line, I think the shell material and construction (lugs, rims etc) are identical, there might be a tad bit more color options in the more recent lines and I also suspect the 1996 line lack RIMS. I might be wrong on this one though. The oldest Premier catalogue I kept is from -99 and RIMS was a completely new concept for Premier drums by then, according to the catalogue. _________________ My Premier Artist Maple set! |

Thank you for the information Premier Artist, and everyone else, I really appreciate it.
This is the set from 1996. Are those RIMS in this picture? I think they are, but I could be wrong. The seller mentioned that the toms hang in the lugs but he forgot what the system was called.

Yes, those are RIMS allright, the original PureCussion RIMS concept. Could be custom mounted after purchase by a previous owner, but I doubt it judging from the picture.
Genista is compariable to the Tama Starclassic Performer line, only the pure handcraft process involved in producing Premier adds a lite extra quality. Or so it seems.
For $1300, hardware (at least some) included, I say go for them! _________________ My Premier Artist Maple set! |

I've had nothing but good experiences with my Genistas! They're bright, punchy, and so easy to tune! They sound pure and VERY resonant. Those babies are sensitive! I just recently made the switch to the Premier Series Maple because I work at a drum store so I can get *wink wink* certain deals But, I LOVE the Genistas. That seems like a really fair price too. Looking one up the other day in the catalogs, new, they floor price for around 2,200 for a shell pack. Comparable premier series Birch kits floor for about 2,650. It's a steal, trust me B) _________________ Proud Premier Player!! |

What do you guys think a 5 piece Genista set from 1996 (the one on the RIMS pic, which seems to have stopped working), that is a little scratchy and worn (nothing really serious, but still visible) with some seemingly worn and aged hardware (pedal, throne, hi-hat stand, and two cymbal stands) and 2 old used Paiste cymbals and a pair of hi-hats would be worth? Oh, and the snare is a Pearl steel one. What would you think would be a decent deal for that if you were to buy it?
I'm just asking to make sure I'm getting a decent deal if I'm gonna buy this set.
Thanks everyone! |

It all depends on the over-all condition. Are the scratches just small bruises on the lacquer or are they deep rifts into the wood? Is the aged hardware just normally worn, or are there springs hanging loose, crooked cymbal holders, defect tension bolts etc? Every defect is an excuse to get a better deal on it, I think. If I were You, I'd try to deal it down a bit. Suggest Your price and keep cool, You don't want to make the seller think You're all fire and flames for the kit - even though perhaps You should be, it's a Premier kit!
$1300 sounds resonable for a Premier Genista kit, but I still think that that price would reffer to an almost flawless kit. _________________ My Premier Artist Maple set! |

Thank you for your reply Premier Artist. Actually, I asked about the scratches and the seller said it's scratch free! It's probably just reflexes in the pictures he sent (that were quite low quality). I am of course gonna play the set in real life before I buy it. If I find anything to nit-pick on, I'll try to get the price down. I'm going to try it out this saturday. If I like it I think I'll buy it, even if I don't get the price down by much...I need a new kit, heh . |
