Wow, yours is DEF older then mine, you have the older style tom holder set up. Yours is proably from the early 90s, probably one of Mapex's 1st run of Mars series. Mine has a more tama like tom suspension system, but not as *Poop*(i dont like the tama tom suspension mounts on their older kits.)

Im a vintage guy my self.. I owned a 40 Yr old set and beat on it for years. Then I bought used. I would still love to have this black and blue(with black lugs/rims DW at the local guitarcenter, but 3k is way to much)

well, you could just look at a drum part supply store/website and find a set of hoops for the toms. make sure you know how many holes they have, and maybe if they are triple flanged or die-cast, if you really want to make it look the same top and bottom. youll also have to buy some tension rods, so just take one out of the top and see how long it is and buy some more of that length. as for the heads to put on the bottom, its standard practice to use a medium weight single ply head such as the Remo Ambassador Clear, Aquarian Classic Clear, or Evans Genera G1. anything thicker will kill the resonance, and super-thin heads may sound a bit too bright.

are you planning on taking the ebonies off of the top of the drum and using them as resonant heads? if they have any deep sticks indentations, i wouldnt do it. you can do it, but if the head is really beaten up it wont sound very good. and are these just standard Ebony Ambassadors or Ebony Pinstripes? if theyre pinstripes, then you definitely shouldnt use them as a resonant head. theyre just too thick and too muffled.

yah, then that would be fine. it would definitely look cool with black heads facing the audience on a white kit.

Not to rain on your parade, but your kit is nowhere near vintage. You can proudly say that you have one of the first Mapex Mars kits made, though. Also, you can use any brand of hoop, as long as it has the right number of holes for the lugs. For bottom heads, you'll want a thin head, like Remo Ambassadors or Evans G1's.
