I like some of the sounds that the electronic drums put out. There's nothing like the real thing. If we go all electric and synthesized like that then why are we even there. I think it takes the talent out. Granted great sounds and it's really neat and everything. I just think we should stick to the way it should be.
laters,
Michael

well, electronic kits can be really convenient in some situations. they take up less space, for small apartments or cramped rooms. you dont have to mess with tuning them. you can control the volume with a knob, so you can bang the heck out of em and still sound soft. theyre easier to carry around, because theyre just a bunch of pads, with wiring and the drum module. you can play in complete silence with headphones, except for what little sound the sticks make on the pad. you dont need 8 mics to record them, all you need to do is just plug em in like any other electronic equipment.

it doesnt mean you have less talent, you still have to hit the drums just the same as any other kit. i can understand why some people would decide to play electric, but acoustic kits will still be the standard until electronic drums can sound as natural as acoustic.

That is just silly. Guitar players own acoustic and electric, with tons of pedals, amps, processors, etc.... Why limit yourself? Take the Roland Vdrums for example...go and play the new td-20 kit and then come back.

Hmm... Give this a thought: If one player can make electronic drums make a song sound great, yet can't use an acoustic kit to get the same quality, are they simply not talented?

No way. There are plenty of e-drummers out there who could absolutely blow me away on "their instrument" and I could outplay them on an acoustic kit, but to each his/her own! I have been working with e-drums on the side for about five years now and they're a very different animal than acoustics, but what's wrong with that? Nothing.

Yeah, and talent is going to need to be defined. Let me suggest that talent is what you start out with. You know, the stuff that just comes naturally. Now skill, that's different. Skill is what you learn on your own and where you take your talent.

So no, electronic drums don't "take the talent out" of drumming. It does however, change the rules a bit. And different is SOOOOOOO bad. Rolling Eyes

So, electric guitarists and keyboardists have "taken the talent out" of it?
Tell me Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Tony Verderosa, Akira Jimbo, Omar Hakim, Gregg Bissonette, and Neil Peart have no talent when playing electronic drums.
Electronics are the real thing. They are no less "real" than any other instrument. What they aren't is acoustic.
To answer your question, "why are we even here?", the answer is "to make music". One of the beautiful things about music is that there are no "rules". What possible difference does it make how a sound is produced? Every time there are advances in any field, there will be those who want to cling to what they are comfortable with. Be aware that the same kinds of things were said with other inventions in the history of drumming: boom cymbal stands, hihat stands, plastic drumheads, double bass drum pedals, 2 bass drum setups, matched grip, etc.
The acoustic piano and acoustic guitar are still with us as will the acoustic drum. Don't be afraid of new equipment. That's all it is.
