I play most of the time black metal, and I'm looking for some new cymbals. I can buy some new Wuhan cymbals for almost nothing, but I don't know if Wuhan makes good stuff for playing metal on, so do you guy's know something about them?

I have wuhan cymbals now, and I found them to be too dark sounding for punk or my acoustic band. I would think that they would be great for metal. They are really decent cymbals for really cheap. I know a guy that uses them for a pantera type band and they sound great for that application.

I haven't played the newer "Turkish-style" line, but I personally think that their Chinas are killer and would be the perfect addition (several) to almost any black-metal kit.

You can't go wrong with Wuhan chinas. They are excellent cymbals for the money. If you play black metal (Opeth!!!), then you will love their sound. They are very dark and shimmery. I have a few recommendations that may be of help to you. If you want a fast accent with a quick decay, get 16" or smaller (they make all the way down to 12"). If you want a really trashy, dark, shimmery sound, however, get something BIG -- at least 20" (they make all the way up to 27"!). I recommend having a range of sizes since they are so cheap, anyway. I would get the following sizes for your application: a 12" or 14" for fast accents, an 18" and a 20" for a standard, full sound in two different pitches, and then something really big for a real explosion -- at least a 24", if not bigger. Play them and see what you think.

Also, you may have read some posts talking about how thin and brittle Wuhans are. Well, yes, they are thin (a big reason they sound so awesome), but they are not any more brittle than any thin cymbal inherently is. They will last a long time if you keep a few things in mind. First and foremost, mount them upside down. Most people mount them in this manner anyway, but I've seen a few who don't -- DO. You want the stick to strike the flat flanged surface to better absorb the impact, not the thin edge. It just common sense, but I thought I would mention it. Forgive me if you're well aware of any of this, by the way. Next, keep this in mind: you do not need to hit them all that hard for them to reach their maximum volume. That point can't be overstated. I'm convinced this is why most drummers break Wuhans. These cymbals reach their full volume with a relatively light strike. They are not like your big, thick Zildjian Z crashes that need to be pounded to sound their best. Wuhans put out plently of volume with a much lighter strike. Lastly (another common sense issue), don't mount them too tightly on the cymbal holder. Give them enough play that they give a little with each strike. Do this, and they will last a long time and sound awesome the whole time.

Has anyone had problems with the mounting holes on Wuhans? My local drum shop had some older wuhans in stock and the holes were too small for standard stands. They fit alright on vintage stands, but wouldn't fit at all or fit dangerously tightly around the screws of newer stands.

Just wanting to make sure that this has been remedied in newer versions of the cymbals before I look to invest.

Never had that issue with any of the Wuhans I've played. However, older cymbals from a while range of brands sometimes tend to have smaller holes which only fit on the smaller 6mm stands and not the 8 mm stands.

Cool

Hmmm, well you've seen them live; I have not. In some pictures I've witnessed, the hole looks big enough to fit over a tailpipe!

The Wuhans you saw must have been older, Pinck. Old Marching Snare is right. The holes are plenty big now -- maybe even a little too big.

Also, with the way Wuhans are designed around the hole (they have that signature, recessed indentation), you don't want the cymbal stand tilter wingnut to be too big, otherwise it will rub against the side of the cymbal when you tighten it down and play it. A wingnut that is too large can easily be cut down on each side with a hacksaw or bandsaw and made to fit, though, so it's not a big deal.

Hm, I haven't tried out any Wuhan crashes myself but from what I've heard they sound pretty dark. I tried a Wuhan ride but it didn't sound too good, compared to a Zildjian or a Paiste. The Wuhan 8" splash is a sweet little thing though, and the Wuhan china's rock big time. Well worth the few bucks I spent on them.

Unless you just like dark cymbals, I don't recommend Wuhan crashes or rides, but you can't go wrong with their splashes and especially, the chinas.

I really like my Wuhan 16" crash. Doesn't sound too dark to me. I also really like using the bell on it- sounds suprisingly good. I also have a Wuhan splash that I like even more. Wuhans rock in my opinion!
