I started playing recently but have wanted to play for long time so I decided to invest in some really nice cymbals. I wanted a nice shimmery but darker sound so here's what I went with:
Paiste 2002 heavy hi-hats 14" (no sound edge)
17" Sabian HHX evolution crash
10" A custom splash
7" Sabain HHX evolution splash
a killer 20" Bosphorous "The Hammer" Ride which is kinda washy and quite thin so you can crash it.
Interestingly the paiste heavy hi-hats are thinner than most brands medium thickness hats which I like. My setup is open handed with ride by my hats and crash on my right with splashes in the middle. I'm thinking of getting a second ride (one with a larger bell and more definition) like a sabian 21" vintage HH ride which I'm diggin at the moment and puttin on my extreme left.
I'm borrowing a kit from a friend at work (UB by Mapex which is cheap as but sounds great after some new skins and tuning).

Yeah that 21" has a great bell sound. I think I am looking into a second ride as well becasue I can't seem to find the "it" ride. Either I dig the bell sound, or I like the thin sound. I just can't seem to find my all around perfect ride.
Anyone else have this problem? |

| I'm actually thinking of getting two more rides in the future. As much as I love my Paiste, some of the Bosphorus cymbals make for amazing jazz cymbals, so I might spring for one of those. |

I went and tried out the 21" HH Sabian vintage ride and ended up buying it. I got it for $500 australian which is about $250 to $300 US. It fits in well and has a nice bell sound and stick sound. Quite a solid ride (medium/heavy I'd say) and so it is a lot more pronounced than the boshporus ride but it fits in really well with all my other cymbals. It's great having two!
The bosphorus ride is above my hats angled at about 45 degrees and the Sabian is to the left of my hats sitting just above at about 10 degrees so I can accent on the bell without having to lift my arm too much. Kinda like how a right handed drummer would have their ride but on the other side of the kit. I find I can use the bosphorus as a crash/ride so it works well only having one crash in the kit. |

I've been thinking about getting another ride, to replace my current one, rather than having 2 in my set-up. But I cant find the right one.
My problem is- I play drums very hard and end up using my ride as crash/ride type thing. My current ride is sabian AA Rock Ride which is ok if u want a really strong stick definition, but if you lay into it, with the shoulder of the stick, the wash it creates is not very nice. Quite dry, and "gongy". So i'm looking for a ride which can take a beating, is nice and loud, has strong enough stick definition for when its needed, but most importantly for me, it needs to have a nice, clean, glassy, controlled wash.
I guess i'm asking a lot, but any suggestions would be great!
But anyway, I like the idea of two rides in a set-up. I guess that must work great for jazz/funk/r'n b etc..... |
