I need to find myself a 14x26 kick and 16x18 floor tom for my '66 blue sparkle ludwig kit. My dumb question is; Is it terribly hard to find these sizes around that era (late '50's to late '60's) and if anyone has any good leads to find these drums. I could possibly get these sizes in an early '70's kit and recover them. Haven't had much luck scouring Ebay lately. If anyone can throw me a bone on this one- it would be greatly appreciated! _________________ Nick Bertling

Well, the 26" kick is going to be terribly hard to find in the exact color you want in a 3ply shell. The 18" floor tom would be easier, but still, not the easiest thing to locate.
Example...I just spent two years looking for a 70s 6ply in natural maple...18" ft that is.
If I were you, I'd look for any 26" 3ply Luddy kick...hopefully one that the wrap is trashed and recover it in blue sparkle.
I'd really hate to take one in good shape and strip it. You should be able to find one that needs help.

Thank you SO much. I really appreciate a straight answer on this one. It's taken me like a month of hunting and asking various people about this one. You know, at this point if I could find three ply luddys in ANY finish I think I would just play them like they are. So I really appreciate the info, thanks again. _________________ Nick Bertling

There's one on ebay right now - Item# 3754282756 b/o badge in natural stain...you wouldn't need to worry about ripping off any old wrap... ...but I still don't condone this behavior. _________________ "No more beards." - Buddy Rich |

CORRECT:
THE 26" BASS IN ANY FINISH VISTALITE, STAINLESS STEEL, SPARKLE PEARL, ECT. WILL BE A HARD TO FIND ITEM.
Large sized floor toms will be more availalbe in the late 60's and 70's during the era of Deep Purple (Ian Paice), John Bonham (Led Zepplin) from time to time use a 18"x20" inch floor tom with his Ludwig kits. I've seen these mostly common in the cortex finished drums.
In 1976, Ludwig changed the way they made the drum shells, and discarded the rock maple reinforcement rings and went with 4 and 6 ply shells because drummers wanted the sound of more wood in their drums.
Before craftsman at Ludwig had to bend by hand and glue each panel of maple around the rings to make the shell. This was what made the Vintage Ludwig sound so great, but at a greater cost dropping the reinforcement rings and going with more plies, the sound was not totally lost.
You might consider using Keller Shells, have them wrapped in Blue Sparkle Pearl. Contact BMD'Z for a price quotation. _________________ THE MASTER |
