I have a Ludwig supraphonic snare from 1965 with no spare and bad drum head's (it sound bad) and i wonder what is good for that type of snare, i like Ian Paice and Cozy Powell type of sound so annyone have any advices of what to use?
I also look for a ludwig set and wonder what sets are good or bad, could a black phanter from 71 be a good set?
anyone knows what type of set ian plays around 1971? |

Your old Ludwig snare would probably sound pretty good with an Aquarian American Vintage batter head, which is a single-ply, medium weight coated head that simulates calfskin. I have one on an old '50s Leedy/Ludwig snare, and it sounds great -- very warm but crisp when tuned high with few overtones.
On the bottom, I'd just go with a standard thin weight snare head, such as the Aquarian Classic Clear snare side or an Ambassador Hazy snare side.
As for your other questions, do you mean "black panther"? If so, I've never heard of a black panther kit from Ludwig, although Mapex makes Black Panther snare drums today.
I'm not sure what kit Ian played in '71, but it was undoubtedly a Ludwig. Sorry I can't help more. |

For your Supraphonic, you can't go wrong with any of these combinations,
- Evans G2 coated batter, Hazy 200 resonant.
- Remo coated Ambassador batter, clear Diplomat resonant.
- Aquarian texture coated Performance II, Classic Clear resonant.
There are lots of other options and combinations, but these are an excellent place to start as you work towards finding the sound that is exactly what you're looking for.
What the heck is a "black phanter"?
And I'll guess that Ian Paice used Ludwig's maple Classics in and around 1971. |

black phanter is wrong spelled, it is black panther an i have seen two of these this month here in sweden, but maby they dont know what they talk about, a ludwig black panther looks like a usual black set i think.
what about Remo CS? did not boham and others use those in the 70's. |

Are you perhaps thinking of the Ludwig Black Beauty? It's a black metal snare drum that has been offered by Ludwig for many years now.
A Remo CS would probably be fine, but I'm really not a huge Remo fan. I don't have anything in particular against them. I just think there are better options available in today's market. However, the CS heads were very popular back then (maybe because there were few options), so if you want that early '70s type of sound, it may be a good choice. |

What skins do Ludwigs start with? Or do Ludwig make that skins that they come with? Because I've noticed that Mapex and Yamaha come with Remo on them... maybe Ludwig comes with something? _________________ "Screw all you little kids who conform to non-conformity! | Ludwig has their own line of drum heads. They're actually decent quality, in my limited experience with them. |
